It has been alleged that a village veterinarian named Amirul Islam of Nazirhat area of Rangpur metropolis has given a certificate to slaughter sick cows for Tk 15,000. The incident took place at Belayet Hossain's farm in Ayodhyapur area of Rangpur Sadar upazila on Friday night.
According to locals, three cows suddenly fell ill at Belayet Hossain's farm around 1.30 pm on Friday. Later, Belayet Hossain, the owner of the farm, called Amirul Islam, a village veterinarian. At that time Amir Islam  suggested slaughtering sick cows in exchange for big money . Belayet Hossain, the owner of the farm, sold the three bulls to local butchers for Tk 33,000, though the price was Tk 210,000.
Meanwhile, Samiul Islam, a butcher from the local Marichtari area, and Ali, a butcher from the Deodoba area, said they informed us when the farm cows fell ill. That night 3 cows were slaughtered in the presence of village doctors and local people. We have also been given certificates for selling gosht after slaughtering cows.
Belayet Hossain, the owner of the farm, said, "After retiring from my job, I bought land in Ayodhyapur area of Sadar upazila and started a small scale blacksmith shop." But suddenly several cows on the farm fell ill late Friday night. If 3 of them are more sick, we sell them to the local butcher at a low price on the advice of Amirul. This has caused me a lot of damage.
In this regard, the village veterinarian Amirul Islam said, I have been treating animals in different areas of the city for 5 long years. I have given this certificate for the benefit of the farm. I shouldn't have given it though.
Concerned ward councilor Shafiqul Islam Mithu said a rural veterinarian could not issue a certificate for the sale of gosht. Selling sick beef is a criminal offense. Appropriate action will be taken against him if it is proved.
